Jim Jensen is fine. Thank God! The heart cath showed nothing significant, and he got a new pacemaker today. God is good! He and Barbara will be home tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers and concern. Jim and Barbara are grateful and so am I.
God bless you.

Many, if not most, communities feel they “must†have walks every season as they always have. Years ago this was not a problem, but now it is most definitely a problem as more and more communities are struggling with low pilgrim count and having to make very hard decisions about holding a walk. The 20 pilgrim minimum has a two fold principle backing the Upper Room guideline that says not to go forward with less than 20 pilgrims. First, you do not want the number of team members to overpower the number of pilgrims. If communities are not careful, the walk goes forward for the benefit of the team because of “all the hard work done in trainingâ€. Second, you cannot in most cases, justify the expense of a walk with less than 20 pilgrims.
The reason I take time to review this with everyone is because apparently many of you feel you MUST have as many walks as you always have had. NOT SO! In fact, you don’t have to have walks at all. You can gather as a fourthday community until such time as you do have enough pilgrims. It may even work to your advantage to cancel or postpone a walk from time to time in order to get the attention of the community about their failure to sponsor.
May I suggest that each Board review their policy concerning holding walks. You will not be judged on canceling or postponing a walk from time to time, but you could be judged on going forward with less than 20 pilgrims.
In some cases, and maybe in many, the equal commitment rule is being misused or not used at all. Conscientious sponsors take the time to sit down with both husband and wife to explain Emmaus, so they both hear your Emmaus story at the same time. When done this way, most spouses will agree to go on the walk without hesitation. Please don’t take the easy way and only speak to one; see both so the two can discuss clearly from the information you shared with them.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me. Most of the time I’m a pretty good listener, and I surely believe in fixing things that are broken.

Candlelight for the Women’s Walk #9 is Saturday night September 20th. Come at 8 o’clock for fellowship, prayer for the pilgrims, and communion before the pilgrims come out. If you are coming (We hope you are!), and if it is raining, please meet in the cafeteria and bring an extra umbrella for pilgrim use. Put your name on it so we can return it to you, if needed.
Thanks and I will see you there.

Early Response Team Training Planned - October 4, 2008
The South Georgia Disaster Response Team has scheduled Early Response Team (ERT) training for October 4, 2008 at Pittman Park UMC in Statesboro. The training will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Barbara Tripp with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) will lead the training. South GA Conference ERT identification cards will be issued to participants during the training. According to new FEMA regulations, volunteers for early response teams must be credentialed and have a photo-ID in order to enter into a disaster area. All ERT members must be at least 18 due to the higher risks involved with this work.
There is a limit of 60 persons per training. Because of the size limitation, participants must pre-register for this event. No walk-ups will be accepted. The cost of the training is $10.00, which includes lunch and snacks. UMCOR volunteer t-shirts will be available for purchase for $8.00. Online registration is available at www.sgaumc.org. For questions contact Rev. Lowery Brantley at lowery@sgaumc.com or 888-266-7642 or Carolyn Schomer, schomerc@bellsouth.net,478- 922-2965. Transportation is available to those wanting to attend but unable to drive through the Local & Connectional Missions Committee of College Place UMC Brunswick. If you would like a ride contact Billy Zeh 912-996-3468.
